Most modern steel plants use what's called a basic oxygen furnace to create steel. Micarta is a relatively soft material that can be scratched if not treated properly. The resulting metal was easy to work with, but iron swords did not hold an edge well and were still too soft. In fact, many swords are breathtaking works of art made by the skilled hands of a craftsman. The main objectives a working point, a belly, and a thin edge are achieved through different designs. The kukri, which had many uses, was kept and the kora was discarded. This could be good if you're using this knife primarily for self defense and want an intimidation factor. Manganese: an important element, manganese aids the grain structure, and contributes to hardenability. The worst of them can easily break by just a small drop to a hard table; however, the best of the ceramics is reasonably tough, tough enough for hard chopping and the like. It should be one which can be opened with one hand. The guard and pommel are usually forged by the smith at the same time that he creates the blade. Its good for scraping, and sometimes chopping. In theory, you can just push a blade through a tomato, so a razor polished plain edge would work fine. Neither destination is desirable. But the tradeoff is that you do not have to sharpen as frequently. Designs are sometimes engraved or etched into the steel to simulate the more complicated pattern welding and damascus blades.
