The DPx Hostile Environment Survival Tool Folder has evolved from its beginnings as the folding version of the HEST fixed blade. The HEST now goes further. On expeditions, hunts or in the conflict zones. Yes, a brutal-use folder can be small and light. DPx Gear features a Titanium alloy frame and a meaty D2 steel blade with G10 scales into an EDC folder. The HEST/F features a rapid deployment system that combines a patented RotoBlock system that actually locks the folder into a fixed blade. The HEST was immediately sold out in both first run and production versions and put to work around the globe. The hard-won experience and tips came back and went directly into this knife: larger frame, tighter 3mm pocket clip, revised pivot geometry, meatier lock and a 4mm G10 scale that replaces steel. All of which to make this HEST stronger and lighter than the famous original. The HEST comes with the stainless steel skull tool for adjustment and handy defense and utility work.

Good knife but Lion Steel makes better

This knife is smaller than I expected, even though I read the numbers on it. The blade is a little wider than I expected to. With a flat grind, it still slices well. It's still like a contradiction, though. It's built tough, with good materials. I don't want to be too hard on it though because the blade fits only into G-10 on the left. If there was even a partial metal liner, I'd feel better. For an EDC, this is pretty nice. It's small, comfortable, and cuts well. The steel is tough and easy to sharpen. The clip is nice and large so it's easy to manage in the pocket. It is annoying that the bottle opener faces the end of the blade. It would be easier to use if it faced the other way. Also, it catches in the pocket when you remove it so I end up with an partially open blade or, eventually, a ripped pocket. The RotoBlock is great but with an already solid lock-up, I'm not sure I'll use it that often. I really like this knife. It's very handy. I just wish the bottle opener was gone and the blade was a little thinner. If there was a metal liner on the left, I'd be happy with the thick blade. Still, I EDC this thing and it does just fine. Consider Lion Steel's (Dendra) Defender if you're looking at this. Also, check out the SR1 knives. If you like this size better, the HEST will serve you well.

Bought this knife via Knifeworks. Overall the knife is a good workhorse. It's light, easy to open and wickedly sharp. Only complaints are the clip and the finish. The clip is a little loose and won't catch up on thin clothing. The mounting though is best as a very small part of the knife sticks out. The black coating needs to be further enhanced. It's thin and scratches off easily, leaving the metal exposed. Nice sturdy built though

Got one of the first ones, and I still like enough that it is on me 24/7. It is tough, well made, and i have no complaints. As a small tool, it is always handy. If i need to go through glass, tempered or not, it is up to the challenge. Cuts through sheetmetal so I can get out of a vehicle if i need to. Interior walls are no challenge. What I do to gear qualifies as abusive...I spent two tours in Vietnam as a Screaming Eagle and was an 11E/19E Platoon Sergeant...I need tough gear. This fits the bill.
