Benchmade Fixed Blades

Benchmade Knife Company, Inc. started out of California but first set-up shop in Clackamas, Oregon in 1990. The initial knives primarily consisted of the Bali-Song knives, using a combination of outside vendors and inside processing to build finished products. Before long, Benchmade, prospered and experienced significant growth. As the product line grew so did the in-house capabilities. The company began to acquire new machines and technologies including the first of several lasers, making Benchmade the first knife manufacturer to have such equipment in-house. Open minds and positive attitudes would lead to several more industry firsts over the course of the next several years. Benchmade fixed blade knives are some of the very best in the knife world. Bushcraft knives as they are often called are very popular for avid campers or hunters because of their inherent strength in structure and overall dependability. Full tang fixed blades are the knife of choice for the most serious outdoorsman because of the strength on construction and they can be used for a number of things other than cutting or slicing. Benchmade fixed blade knives often have an extended tang which is that small piece of material at the back of the handle often used as a for lanyards but their main purpose is as a pummel. Whether to break glass or smash open something else, this addition to the fixed blades’ basic design has been very well received by knife enthusiasts, collectors as well as survivalists and hunters.

Most of the bushcraft knives produced by Benchmade have a CPM S30V stainless steel blade that are either have a satin finish like the 183S Fixed Contego or coated like the 183BK Fixed Contego. Either way, what the CPM S30V will give you is a strong edge retention capability and the obvious advantage of not worrying that it will rust any time soon. Whether it be a buschcraft knife of a skinner, Benchmade fixed blades have earned a reputation of being one of the very best in the world. However, Benchmade’s roster of fixed blade knives does not end with bushcraft or skinners. Benchmade also has a whole line of daggers, gut hooks, emergency strap cutters, tomahawks and of course kitchen utility knives. >

When it comes to handling a Benchmade fixed blade, the company has become quite clever. Of course there are the obvious handles that will often have G-10 textured scales but there are a lot of Benchmade fixed blades that the handle is the same material as the blade. SOCP daggers are one solid piece of 440C steel that has a finger loop for easy deployment. The Benchmade 375 Adamas is another example of this. Designed by custom knife maker Shane Sibert, It is one solid piece of D2 steel with a drop point smooth edge and handle sloped for ease of use. Finally, the Benchmade Forged Tomahawk is forged from one solid piece of 4140 chromoly blade steel although it does have couple of G-10 inserts for improved grip.
